Editor Nathan Williams contacted me about shooting for Volume 2 of Kinfolk last August. This really made my day because I had been drooling over Vol 1 and its VERY rare (at least for me) that someone you wish were a client calls out of the blue. I typically need 3 recommendations from within the magazine and 100000 email exchanges before I get an assignment.
He asked if I had any ideas about what I wanted to shoot, stills or video, did I want to collaborate with a writer…etc I kind of sat on my hands for a week or two and then figured it out:
The subject line of my email to food industry friends Ian Knauer, Nick Fauchald, JJ Goode, Adam Houghtaling, and Alan Sytsma (google them) was KINFOLK BROMANCE WEEKEND (creative chum Pete Pawlick kept our glasses full)…and thus the piece was born. Ian’s forthcoming cookbook, THE FARM (out in may), is set at his beautiful family farm in Pennsylvania and knauer being the superman that he is hosted our booze drinking, clay shooting, bear eating Kinfolk weekend.
I remember after my first gulp of whiskey quietly telling myself, “Will, just don’t fucking forget to take the pictures.” …Kinfolk is the way life and work should be.
